Hello, we are Calum Brown and Calvin Quigley, both 17 and from Airdrie. We’re in a group called Communic18 and we are really excited to tell you more about our role in the Year of Young People 2018 (YoYP 2018).
2018 is a very significant year for us and young people across Scotland. We joined Communic18, a group of 35 young people from across Scotland to support and advise partners on involving young people in their YoYP 2018 activity.
We’ll be giving guidance around why sharing power with young people in decision making is important and giving insight into a range of issues.
As members of this group we will be attending grant panels to make important decisions about funding for the Year, advising government groups, leading interactive workshops with other young people, and much more! We have never volunteered for a national project before, and we jumped at the chance to develop skills old and new. We want to work with you as well so do get in touch.
We got involved in planning for the Year of Young People 2018 as we thought it would be a good way to make a difference for young people in Scotland and have our voices heard which hasn’t always been the case. We also thought it would be a great opportunity to be involved with something big and exciting!
One issue that we want to change is the perceptions of young people and how we are treated in society. Often undermined, we want to see achievements of young people being celebrated and their contributions to communities being valued across the country.
For example, recently we attended an EventScotland meeting where we discussed possible events for YoYP 2018 and gave our honest opinions on how we think young people would react to them all, so that next year is really what young people want. The events sound amazing, and everyone should be very excited!
One of the main things we are looking forward to is attending all the different and events and activities and seeing how these will bring a variety of people of all ages and across the country together. We’re looking forward to working with anyone who needs some advice from a bunch of fantastic young people like ourselves.

Young people are at the heart of YoYP 2018 and everything we do and say is always in partnership with them. To ensure this is achieved from start to the legacy of YoYP 2018, we created a co-design group, Communic18.
As Calum and Calvin mention, the group are working with organisations across all 32 local authorities, making sure young people are influencing the design, delivery and decision making for YoYP 2018.
Young Scot, Children in Scotland, the Scottish Youth Parliament are supporting the group. You can find out more at young.scot/yoyp2018
